Mark Your Calendars for the Second Annual World Digital Preservation Day

| November 27 2018

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Happy World Digital Preservation Day!

Wait—happy what, now?

What Is World Digital Preservation Day?

This Thursday, November 29, 2018, is the second annual World Digital Preservation Day (WDPD). (It’s sort of the first, actually; last year, the first-ever WDPD was called International Digital Preservation Day.) Coordinated by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), WDPD is an opportunity to “celebrate the collections preserved, the access maintained and the understanding fostered by preserving digital materials.”

The DPC is compiling blogs and thought leadership articles about the importance of digital preservation in advance of the holiday itself. On Thursday, it will host webinars, such as the livestreamed Digital Preservation for Everyone—World Digital Preservation Day Seminar, a radio show, and training sessions, including one on a subject we frequently discuss here at Hanzo: Future-Proofing Your Data.

But ... why?

Why Have a World Digital Preservation Day?

There’s already a holiday for everything else! From Everything You Think Is Wrong Day to Iced Tea Day to Thrift Shop Day (which is about actual thrift shops, not Thrift Shop), dedicated holidays offer a straightforward way to remind everyone of the importance of whatever we hold close to our hearts. For some, that’s guacamole; for the good folks at the DPC, it’s digital preservation.

In truth, though, the DPC created WDPD to bring awareness to the importance of preserving digital materials. We all use digital content every day, but because of that familiarity, we take it for granted. We assume that information that is available today will always be available—but without data preservation guardians, that’s not a safe assumption. As the DPC explains,

Digital materials are a core commodity for industry, commerce and government. They are fundamental for research, the law and medicine. The creative industries, cultural heritage and the media depend on reliable access to digital materials while families and friends extend and sustain their relationships through digital interactions. What better reason to celebrate the opportunities created by digital preservation?!

To that end, the DPC launched its inaugural Digital Preservation Day last year to “do ‘something’ that celebrated the normally uncelebrated day-to-day work of digital preservationists around the world.” It was a bigger success than they expected, so, naturally, they’re doing it again.

Hanzo Is Proud to Celebrate World Digital Preservation Day

This year, Hanzo will be joining in the celebration, catching some webinars, and enjoying the opportunity to read a curated selection of articles about how others are preserving digital resources. Look to our twitter feed where we'll showcase some educational content and blogs regarding collecting dynamic web content and digital preservation of dynamic native format data. We’ve been advocates for the importance of preserving online resources for years and have helped countless companies preserve their online content for ediscovery, regulatory compliance, and more.
