Meet Team Hanzo: Gerardo Madrid, Bringing Empathy & Creativity To Help People Thrive At Work

| October 7 2021

As Hanzo celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month, I have the excellent opportunity to highlight another fellow team member representing the Hispanic community. This month, I am featuring Gerardo Madrid. He's a genuinely kind, hard-working person who also happens to have some phenomenal artisanal talents that make me crave going to New York and meeting him in person. Read on, and you'll be able to spot why.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Hanzo?

Gerardo:  I am the Global HR Business Partner at Hanzo. My goal is to manage the day-to-day operations of the HR department and partner with the team to create positive people and culture programs that make wonderful employee experiences that drive business results.

What attracted you to join Hanzo?

Gerardo: The technology, innovation, and people I met throughout my interview process! I also liked that Hanzo is in growth mode with so many expansion opportunities in the market. This growth allows our people the opportunity to work in a fun and exciting, fast-paced environment.

What problems are you currently solving? How does it benefit the customer?

Gerardo: I am currently working on creating more structure around our remote hiring and onboarding processes to hire the best talent to join Team Hanzo and welcome them to the organization with all the support, training, and tools needed to hit the ground running.

There are also so many exciting people and culture initiatives that I enjoy working on this half of the year. For example, we're driving objectives and key results (OKRs) that cascade into our goal-setting framework, our employee engagement survey, and working with our DE&I and employee advocacy groups on special projects and events.

What is your philosophy about problem-solving for work or life in general?

Gerardo: I genuinely believe that good problem-solving starts with understanding and evaluating the problem, which is the key to addressing issues effectively. There can also be many solutions to one problem so partnering with leaders to determine and align on the best approach is also key to making the right decision for the business.

What is the most surprising thing you've learned after more than a year of pandemic restrictions?

Gerardo: How quickly people and companies were able to adapt to a new normal! It seems like overnight, our way and perception of how we work has changed forever. Today, workers everywhere are seeking fully remote and hybrid working models.

Only 8% of remote employees are willing to return full-time to work after the pandemic, according to the Remote Work & Compensation Pulse Survey published by Salary.com on June 23, 2021. While 48% of workers want to work from home permanently, the remaining 44% want to work from home part of the week.

What is your favorite thing to do when you're not working?

Gerardo: I would say spending quality time with my family, friends, and 7-year old rescue Chihuahua Mix, Tito. Trying new restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops are also my favorite things to do outside of work. My coolest fun fact is that I have an A.S. in Baking & Pastry Arts from Johnson & Wales University. Additionally, I had the unique opportunity to study abroad. I earned my French Pastry Arts Diploma at the École Nationale Supérieure de Pâtisserie located in Yssingeaux, in France's Auvergne region. 😋

Where do you live? And, what is your favorite place to take guests to experience the best of your city?

Gerardo: I recently moved to New York City in June. I have so much to explore still, but so far, I have enjoyed walking and exploring Central Park, biking on the West Side Highway, and trying out all the fantastic restaurants!
