Here at Hanzo Archives, we sometimes get a bit fed up of repeating the same message over and over again about backups and compliance. For instance, <a title="Solutions" href="http://www.hanzoarchives.com/solutions/">here</a> and <a title="IT Backups and Compliance" href="http://www.hanzoarchives.com/it-backups-and-compliance/">definitely here</a>—well, you get my point.
So, the reason for this post is to point out (again) that far too many people are still relying on backups, thinking they will somehow meet their compliance needs.
Backups are designed for data recovery and to get your servers back up as fast as possible should something go wrong. Yet, backups are rarely tested. Here's a fun test to try: Go and see your head of IT and ask him/her how easy it would be to see a copy of your website from the 22nd of January for this year, and last year from (pick a random date.) Now, watch their face carefully...interesting, yes?
An additional fact about backups: They cost more and more to restore over time. The data is stored separately from the software and if a site is built from several machines each of those may be backed up separately. As you might imagine, the older the backup the more pain you endure in the restoration process. We have heard some real horror stories including companies being forced to re-hire employees to get software working again.
